Nuno–Modogashe Road…Connecting lives and unlocking development

Kenya -

In northern Kenya, a once-remote stretch of land is now a vital corridor of opportunity.

The Nuno–Modogashe road, funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) with a loan of USD 10 million, stretches 136 kilometers across Garissa and Wajir counties—connecting rural communities to education, healthcare, markets and each other.

But this is more than a road.

It’s a lifeline that saves lives, restores hope, and builds futures:

  • It is Aden, a local taxi driver, who once braved dangerous, muddy routes and the threat of banditry, now making smooth, safe trips with more customers and renewed confidence.
  • It is Ken, a restaurant owner, receiving fresh supplies the same day and serving a growing stream of travelers and locals alike.
  • It is Fartun, a young girl who dreams of becoming a nurse, now able to attend school regularly—hopeful, determined and closer to her future.

Today, for more than 200,000 people across northern rural Kenya, this road has become a lifeline. It is enabling better access to essential services, fostering cross-border trade and strengthening regional integration, standing as a powerful example of how infrastructure can ignite inclusive, sustainable development in underserved regions.

This road development project supports Kenya’s Vision 2030 and reinforces the country’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

  • Goal 9: building resilient infrastructure that promotes inclusive and sustainable industrialization as well as fosters innovation.
  • Goal 11: making communities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

At ADFD, we believe that investing in infrastructure is an investment in people. It supports their potential to progress and helps them build a brighter future for their communities.

The Nuno–Modogashe road is not merely a construction project but a living example of how a strategic partnership can bring about transformative, sustainable development with long-lasting impact.

How do you think rural infrastructure projects can change the lives of underserved communities?
