Achieve sustainable economic growth and reduce poverty

Project Name

Hulule Airport Construction

In 1978, ADFD funded the development of Hulhulé Airport (now Velana International Airport) in the capital Malé to enhance its capacity to handle passengers, aircrafts and cargo. The project included land reclamation to extend the airport’s runway, infrastructure upgrade to receive larger aircrafts, the construction of fuel depots, and the provision of wireless and air navigation equipment. The significant enhancement of the airport’s capabilities enabled it to accommodate the surge in the number of tourist arrivals from various parts of the world to the Maldives, resulting in a strong boost to tourism and related economic activities in the island country.
