Overview

As one of Mauritania’s crucial sectors, agriculture supports a significant proportion of economic activity and employs over 53 per cent of the country’s workforce. Despite climate change and economic challenges, the government works on implementing policies that bolster the development of the sector. In a bid to assist Mauritania in meeting this national objective, ADFD provided a concessionary loan to finance the strategic Garjol Agricultural Project, aimed at achieving food self-sufficiency, curbing reliance on imports and contributing to the development of other key sectors. The project included the construction of a 40-metre-high concrete dam with a capacity of 500 million cubic metres, a rice peeling and processing plant, residential units, community centres and public facilities, as well as the rehabilitation of a 3,600-hectare model farm.
