Overview

At more than 1,600 kilometres , the Senegal River is Africa's ninth longest river. Flowing through Guinea, Mali, Senegal and Mauritania, the river is strategically important to energy production, irrigation of agricultural land and supply of drinking water. To elevate the living standard of the local population, ADFD provided a concessionary loan in 1982 to build a dam in Diama, located near the mouth of the Senegal River. The project also involved the construction of the Manantali Dam about 1,100 kilometres from Diama on the Bafing River, a tributary of the Senegal River.
