Overview

Given the growing importance of the renewable energy sector in accelerating sustainable development, ADFD extended a concessionary loan to the Government of the Maldives to implement a waste-to-energy project as part of the first cycle of the IRENA/ADFD Project Facility. The project supplies electricity to Addu City in the South of the Maldives from clean sources, saving about 1.9 million litres of diesel and reducing the city’s total waste by 10 per cent. The scope involved the construction of a power plant that incinerates waste in an eco-friendly manner to generate about four megawatts of energy from the heat, meeting 18 per cent of Addu City's electricity needs.
