Overview

The project enabled the country’s Central Electricity Board to install photovoltaic panels (PV) on rooftops of 10,000 households. The initiative was part of the Mauritian government’s efforts to alleviate poverty, and contribute to the national target of adding 35% renewables into the energy mix by 2025. Financed through the IRENA/ADFD Project Facility, the initiative brings 10 megawatts of renewable energy capacity online, significantly improving the energy security of the island nation. It also enables an estimated 30,000 low-income individuals to save on electricity bills.
