Overview

Financed as part of the fourth cycle of the IRENA/ADFD Project Facility, the Tina River Hydropower Project in Solomon Islands aims to curb the island’s reliance on imported diesel by almost 70%, lowering power prices for homes and businesses across the country, where the price of electricity is among the highest in the world and heavily exposed to global fuel price fluctuations and shocks, according to IFC. The project will also pave the way for the country to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 2.5 times its 2025 target. The initiative is expected to benefit 183,000 people, and achieve annual savings of energy worth US$28 million.
